1906 Earthquake

Overnight 250 city blocks were devastated and 300,000 San Franciscans became homeless. Tent cities popped up to provide shelter, kitchens, and care centers all over the Bay Area.

What sticks in my mind is how city residents pulled together post quake / fire. An atmosphere of equality and community spirit akin to the aftermath of war resulted as tents were pitched in vacant lots and parks and among the ashes of Nob Hill.” — Jack London —
